We closed the shop not long after Phil and the others left, and headed home, stopping on the way to buy food. Apparently, Graham could cook and wanted to make us dinner. I was surprised for a moment, until I remembered he would have needed to teach himself to cook, otherwise he probably would have starved or eaten every unhealthy thing he could.

I did wonder at times, if Graham missed living in his house, but then I saw him laughing with all of us, and soaking up the atmosphere of having people laughing and joking, and realised he probably didn’t. He was no longer lonely. He didn’t have to do anything on his own and he had everything he was missing before, love and friendship, and he seemed genuinely happy.

Graham was in the kitchen, cooking something that smelled wonderful, when a thought hit me. “Graham, do you get reports from college and have a parents’ evening?”

Graham stopped stirring something in one of the saucepans. “Yep. At school I always just faked mum’s signature and told them she was working and couldn’t come. I’ve not had one at college yet. I think it’s due sometime around half term.”

“Do you want one of us to go to the parents’ evening?”

Graham looked shocked at that, like it had never crossed his mind that any of us would be interested enough to go. I knew the very person who would want to go.” I can go for you, but I think William would rather he went.”

Graham looked hopeful. “Do you really think he would?”

“Yep, next time you see him, ask him. I bet he will jump at the chance, as well as being flattered that you asked him.” He hurried around the counter and gave me a big hug. “Thanks Ray.” He paused for a moment.

“What? You know you can tell me anything,” I reassured him.

“I would like to permanently move in here, if that’s okay. I love being around all of you, and for the first time since my mum died, I feel safe. Do you mind?”

I laughed and pulled him back in for another hug. “Why would we mind? We’ve wanted you to move in since we met you,” I told him. “We need to figure out a way to get your belongings.”

“I can pop home tomorrow after college, and get the most important items I want to keep, and pick up some more clothes. I can tell him I’m going to stay with friends again. He knows I have some mad assignments due, so he won’t question it.”

I pulled back and looked at him. I was concerned about him going home, even if it was for one night.

“I can go with Graham and keep him safe,” Octavian offered from the doorway.

I looked at Graham. “What do you think? I would feel better about this if he did,” I told him.

Graham nodded. “I can do that.” He turned to look at the soldier. “Thanks Octavian.”

“You are more than welcome,” the soldier said.
